Ted Lempert

President, Children Now

Ted Lempert is president of Children Now, a California-based research and policy organization that is focused on transforming children’s advocacy. Children Now coordinates The Children’s Movement of California, which has over 6,000 organizational members. He oversees the nonprofit’s work to improve conditions for kids, including historic school equity reform, health coverage for all California kids, universal preschool for four-year-olds, expanded access to childcare, and support for foster youth. Lempert is also a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at UC Berkeley.

Previously, Lempert was the CEO and co-founder of EdVoice, a California education reform organization. He was a California state assemblymember for four terms representing Silicon Valley. He served as chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Select Committees on Education Technology, and co-chair of the Joint Committee to Develop a Master Plan for Education. He had more than 75 bills signed by three governors.

Lempert also served on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and the San Mateo County Board of Education. Prior to holding public office, Lempert was special counsel and an associate for the law firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, and Hampton.

Lempert serves on numerous boards and advisory boards, including Supply Bank, the Stanford Graduate School of Education, Generation Up, and Policy Analysis for California (PACE). He graduated from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and earned his law degree from Stanford University.
