About the speaker

Janet Vertesi is a sociologist of science and technology at Princeton University, where she serves as an associate professor in the Department of Sociology.

Vertesi is best known for her research with NASA’s robotic spacecraft teams, published in books like Seeing Like a Rover and Shaping Science, funded by the National Science Foundation. She is also known for her unique experiments with The Opt Out Project in digital living without tracking, surveillance, or Big Tech capture. Additionally, she studies the transformations that facilitate the entrance of digital technologies into today’s workplace, and how we might built better technologies to better respect our social worlds.

She publishes in sociology, science, and technology studies, and in critical approaches to human computer interaction design.
